On December 1, 2020, USCIS adopted revisions to the civics test for naturalization, making the test more challenging for those wanting to become naturalized U.S. citizens. The updated test incorporates 28 additional history and civics questions (for a total of 128) and adds revisions to some of the existing questions. Applicants now will be asked at least 20 questions, rather than 6 – 10. The pass rate of 60% has not changed, but applicants will now be presented with a full 20 questions and must correctly answer at least 12.
Fortunately, USCIS has retained the 65/20 rule for applicants 65 years or older who have been lawful permanent residents for at least 20 years. These long-term lawful residents are tested on only 10 questions from the list of 128. They too must achieve a passing score of 60%.
