USCIS announced it will expand in-person interviews for employment-based adjustment of status applications. This practice is “part of the agency’s comprehensive strategy to further improve the detection and prevention of fraud and further enhance the integrity of the immigration system.” While these are important considerations, we are concerned whether USCIS has the resources to implement this, and how this will affect an already-backlogged system. If the Nebraska Service Center is currently adjudicating I-485 applications filed before November 2, 2016, the addition of employment-based applications could increase the processing to well more than a year. Employers and employees should prepare for the long wait. We will keep you informed as the interview process develops.
