The Biden administration extended the travel bans under the several Presidential Proclamations. Travelers from the following countries are prohibited from entering the United States, with some exceptions: China, Iran, the Schengen Area, the U.K., Ireland, Brazil and South Africa. However, certain individuals such as business travelers, investors, treaty traders, academics, students, and journalists may be eligible for national interest exceptions (NIE). An approved NIE application would allow an individual to enter the U.S., provided the individual can demonstrate the purpose in coming is a matter of national interest. Promoting the economy, providing health care, creating employment opportunities, national security, facilitating transportation, and humanitarian concerns are examples of viable national interest claims.
