It was a joyous surprise to read the U.S. Supreme Court decision released on June 18th. We expected DACA to be slashed and we feared for the fate of thousands of young Dreamers. But the Court spared DACA . . . for the time being. In its decision, the Court upheld the continuance of DACA. It criticized the administration’s actions and remanded the matter to the Department of Homeland Security. The Court instructed the administration to give weight to retaining “forbearance,” that is, allowing Dreamers to remain without enforcing deportation, and “the hardship to DACA recipients” by ending the benefit. This news is important to immigrant families across the nation, reviving some sense of confidence in the system and the hope that America can be home for good. It is also important for employers, business owners (many of whom are DACA applicants), and the community at large, as many DACAs fill important jobs that are essential to our economy.
